The Complete Process: From Framing to Finished Walls

Drywall may appear simple once installed, but the journey from bare framing to a finished wall involves careful steps, skilled labor, and the right timing. Whether you’re building a new home, remodeling a room, or finishing a garage, understanding the full drywall installation process helps you plan better and appreciate the craftsmanship behind those smooth walls.

1. Framing the Structure

The first step is the framing—typically done with wood or metal studs spaced 16 or 24 inches apart. This framework forms the skeleton of the wall and must be level, secure, and properly aligned before any drywall work begins.

2. Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC Rough-Ins

Before hanging drywall, all in-wall systems (like wiring, outlets, plumbing lines, and ductwork) must be installed and inspected. Once this is complete and approved, insulation can be added between the studs.

3. Installing Drywall Sheets

Drywall sheets are measured, cut, and installed horizontally or vertically based on the layout and ceiling height. Sheets are fastened to the studs using screws or nails, ensuring minimal gaps between panels.

4. Taping and Mudding

Joint tape is applied over seams and screw holes, followed by multiple coats of joint compound (“mud”) to create a smooth, seamless surface. Each coat must dry completely before sanding and applying the next.

5. Sanding and Surface Smoothing

After the final mud coat dries, the entire surface is sanded to remove bumps, edges, or imperfections. Dust control is important at this stage, as drywall dust can be very fine and messy.

6. Priming and Painting

Before painting, a primer is applied to seal the drywall and prepare it for the topcoat. Once primed, walls can be painted or textured to the client’s preference.

7. Final Touches and Cleanup

Outlets and switch covers are installed, baseboards go back in place, and the space is cleaned for handoff. Professional teams will often walk through the project with the client to inspect for touch-ups.

From the initial framework to that first coat of paint, drywall is a step-by-step process where each phase builds upon the last. Hiring experienced professionals ensures the job gets done efficiently, cleanly, and with lasting results.
